Chapter Twenty-three

“How’s work?” George asked Mia later that night. He’d tried to bring Chinese takeaway home, Mia’s favourite, from the bottom of Middleton Park Avenue, but despite it being a Thursday, they were shut. He’d opted for fish and chips instead. They were sitting at the kitchen table, sharing a pot of tea when he asked.

“Work’s not going so well, to be honest, George. This killer of yours is scaring people. Everybody’s wondering who’s next. They keep pleading with me as if I somehow have the capability of catching him. It’s your fault. It’s because you’re the SIO.”

A headache was brewing. “I wasn’t even going to bring up the case. But I understand why your colleagues are scared. I’m going to catch this killer. I promise you.”

The annoyance turned to irritation, and she raised a brow. “The killer. You mean the Miss Murderer?”

George paused. “What? The Miss Murderer? Fuck me, is that what they’re calling him?”

She nodded. “That’s right. That’s what they’re calling him in all the tabloids. Janine showed me today. That’s two unmarried teachers killed within a week. Some of the teachers were joking about getting married so that they wouldn’t be targeted. Or colouring their hair.”

“Colouring their hair?”

“Yeah, both teachers were blonde. I hope I’m not next, George.”

George Googled the Miss Murderer and found she was right. He tapped his fingers on the table rapidly. “Trust the media to label him,” he said. “I bet that fucker’s gloating. Bet the sick bastard is happy about his nickname. I’ll catch him. Hopefully, it’ll make him more reckless and more prone to mistakes. You’re safe, babe, trust me.”

Mia bit her lip and grabbed his hand that was on the table. “This killer’s definitely killing unmarried female teachers, right?” George nodded. “You need to catch him before he kills a friend of mine.”

“Don’t be silly, Mia,” he said, not denying her theory. His team believed the fact that the teachers were unmarried was a coincidence. They were convinced he was selecting young teachers with blonde hair and blue eyes. Most young teachers were unmarried. They’d kept victim selection back from the press release.

She stared at him. “How does he know they’re teachers?”

“He stalks them before he kills them.” They’d kept that back from the press release, too. “But it’s not common knowledge, so don’t mention it to anyone, OK?”

She nodded and smiled. “You’re not being followed?”

She shook her head and then said, “So, why teachers? Doesn’t he think our lives are hard enough as it is? I’ve got so much planning to catch up on. And it’ll be parents’ evening soon. Then it’s reports. It’s never-ending.”

George knew she struggled with parts of her job. She loved teaching but hated the paperwork and the politics most of all. She’d nearly quit last year, but her colleague, William, had convinced her to stay. Not that he had any proof, George had been sure they had started an affair. She’d stayed late at work and went out at weekends, opting to stay out and sleep at her friends’ houses instead of coming home.
